Runemaster Weapon Engraving Rework
August 15, 2026 Runemaster Weapon Engraving rebuild on Vol'jin — Icebound Momentum, cross-element synergies, Arcane and Water reworks, Expansive Engraver, Ragnaros Ice+Wind pairing, and PvP trims.
Why This Patch Matters
On August 15, 2026 Ascension rebuilt the Runemaster Weapon Engraving system so no single pairing stays default. Each element now has a combat identity, and several combinations are written to reward the creature overhaul — the changelog explicitly names Ice + Wind against Ragnaros.
If you exported a July Spellslinger or Riftblade tree, treat it as a starting point only. Residual Power, Air Engraving, and the new level-50 passive Expansive Engraver change how haste, attack speed, and splash damage stack. Leveling still lives on the Runemaster Leveling Build; this page is the endgame engraving pass.
New Rules — Icebound Momentum & Swaps
Ice Engraving now applies Icebound Momentum (12 seconds, up to 8 stacks, once every 5 seconds per target). Each stack adds Frost damage to your direct and periodic hits. Switching Weapon Engravings — or swapping the engraved weapon — clears your Momentum stacks. Do not mid-fight swap on Ragnaros or Hakkar unless the phase is worth the reset.
Air Engraving passively grants 10% haste. Residual Power doubles Air's contribution and adds attack speed. Water Engraving no longer plays as a generic slow: it steals a percentage of your maximum mana from the target, restores what it actually stole, and deals Frost damage from that amount. Arcane Engraving no longer cuts healing received — it marks the target for 5 seconds and converts 30% of effective healing during the mark into Arcane damage when the mark expires.
- Earth + Air: Earth Engraving deals +10% damage per target hit while Air is active
- Air + Ice: Air's damage replication rises from 30% to 60% on targets you have Icebound Momentum on
- Fire + Air: Fire Engraving proc chance 30% → 60% while Air is active
- Ice + Fire: Ice Engraving gains +30% crit chance on targets you have Fire Engraving on
Raid Pairings After August 15
Molten Core / Ragnaros: Start from Ice + Wind (Air). Momentum stacks through the longer 30% execute, Air haste covers son phases, and the changelog calls this pairing out against fire creatures. Keep a Fire off-hand plan only if your guild already assigns you bomb soaks and you need the Fire+Air proc bump on trash.
Zul'Gurub / Hakkar: Arcane mark plus Earth splash (radius now 8 yards) is the clean raid default — you punish healer throughput on Hakkar without the old healing-received penalty. Water is the mana-starve option for long Bloodlord pulls, not a first pick on execute.
Mythic+ / Heroic altars: Air + Fire for pack density; swap to Ice + Air on single-target shrine bosses. Surging Slash has no target cap and jumped to 150% weapon damage — Riftblade cleave is real again in +10 keys.
Numbers You Will Feel
Most core PvE spells gained roughly 13–16% damage and scaling against monsters (Hurricane, Turbulence, Obliteration, and the primordial suite sit at the high end). Windsage rose from 30% to 75%. Runeblade attack-power scaling went 12.5% → 30% and now also scales 30% from spell power — Riftblade finally shares caster gear. All Runemaster damage is −8% in PvP; Palm Sigil: Fire is another −10% in PvP.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I lose Icebound Momentum if I swap weapons?
Yes. Switching Weapon Engravings or swapping the engraved weapon clears every Icebound Momentum stack you applied.
What is Expansive Engraver?
The new Engravement level-50 passive. It is the node that turns on the cross-element bonuses listed above — Earth+Air splash, Air+Ice replication, Fire+Air procs, and Ice+Fire crit.
Is Runemaster still good in PvP?
Playable, not free. The 8% PvP damage cut and the Palm Sigil: Fire trim stop the old Air+Fire arena stomp. Bring Water or Arcane for utility, not raw pressure.
Should I still level as Spellslinger?
Yes. The engraving rework is an endgame identity pass. Level 1–60 still belongs on the Runemaster Leveling Build page.
